Its funny how some ideas just seem to keep popping up over and over again. We are working with a client right now who is of French heritage and wanted to weave that in as a discrete theme throughout her wedding. Not only that but I am going to give a shout out to my cousin Lorraine, who lives in Geneva, Switzerland right now for work (miss you!) and her dream wedding is to have an intimate dinner at Le Meurice in Paris. Sparkling Eiffel Tower and all. Doesn't that sound so appealing?
So with these two inspirations from people we care deeply for, I couldn't help myself but create an inspiration board of ideas for how I see a french themed wedding.
1. Macaroons-the original cookie sandwich. Melt in your mouth and so much easier to serve than an American wedding cake. Even more traditionally french would be a Croquembouche Tower!
2. Fleur De Lis invitations in classic black and white will set the perfect tone for your event.
3. French Fries, cough, I mean Frites Pont-Neuf ! While their history of who fried the first potato is up for debate, who wouldn't love this as a late light snack while dancing the night away? Have different dipping sauces to up the ante...truffle oil, old bay, flavored mayonnaise...Presentation is everything though, serve them up in french newspaper cones!
4. Tie your invitation theme back to the invites with discreet hints of the Fleur De Lis. Since you are holding a more fashion forward event than just a traditional ballroom event, use these wreaths to adorn the doors and let guests know your soiree is here! Use pages out of a classic french novel like Les Miserables to create the "leaves" (pun intended).
5. If you have ever been to Paris, you know they have the most decadent pastry shops. Capture the essence of the City of Love with your own dessert table with candies, cookies and mini pastries like eclairs all presented in vintage French apothecary jars. Notice the profile cameos hanging from the table? You could mirror this same idea in a brooch from your grandmothers jewelry box for your "something old" too. (even better if your Nana is a Frenchie!)
6. & 7. Keep it tight and simple with candles and white flowers, white tablecloths or no linen at all. Bring in the silver jars and self serve water carafes just like you were dining curbside along the Champs-Elysees.
8. Anemone. No, not enemy, but its close since of course its a long running rumor that the French despise Americans. However, this flower will surely put our differences aside, and bring the classic bouquet to a slightly more modern front. That pop of black will stand out better against your white wedding dress anyways!
9. See picture. Enough said.
10. The perfect place for interesting pictures under this Art Nouveau sign for the French Metro. You can chronicle your destination wedding at this historic spot since its the second busiest metro in Europe (second to Moscow) and has been in service since 1900.
11. Though we'd all like to afford a designer wedding gown from a french fashion house, let's be honest, you blew all your money on the plane ticket to get there. Go vintage instead. Styles from 1920s flapper to the 1960s babydoll would all work wonders to jazz up your unique nuptials.
(Plus if you are anything like my cousin and I you're saving up for that black quilted Chanel bag and you need every penny you can spare.)
